The June 2023 edition of snap shots includes:
- Stephanie Tung, Byrne Family Curator of Photography at the Peabody Essex Museum, spoke at PHSNE’s June ZOOM meeting on June 4, 2023, about the recent exhibition Power and Perspective: Early Photography in China (Sept 24, 2022 – April 2, 2023). Co-curated by Karina Corrigan, the H.A. Crosby Forbes Curator of Asian Export Art and Tung, this exhibition explored the introduction and adoption of photography in 19th-century China.
- PHSNE’s Photographica 90 camera and image show was a great success (April 22, 2023) with over 450 visitors and 89 dealer exhibits at Newton North High School. Watch for details on next year’s Photographica 91 in April.
- Camera of the Month: Charles Chevalier (1804-1859) and his folding Photographe Daguerreotype Camera
- The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill is now home for the Roland L. Freeman Collection, an archive of Black life in the twentieth century.
- The Fitchburg Art Museum’s In the Eye of the Beholder exhibit explores the ‘gendered gaze’ in the 20th and 21st centuries, drawing from the museum’s collections and new acquisitions; on view through September 10, 2023.
