Head Librarian and Archivist Trenton Carls and Photo Archivist Maegan Squibb were the driving forces behind Above the Fold: The Photographers of the Gloucester Daily Times, 1973-2005, on display at the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester, MA through March 17th. Carls writes, “The captivating photographs in the exhibition draw on an important archive of an estimated one million photographs, a recent acquisition donated to the Museum by the North of Boston Media Group, owners of the Gloucester Daily Times. Through the photographs and personal accounts of more than one dozen GDT photographers, the exhibition reflects the people and stories of Cape Ann through the photography that has and continues to bring people together. It shares the integral role that local photojournalism plays in documenting the community.”

Presenting at the February 4th PHSNE meeting, librarians/ archivists turned curators Carls and Squibb will discuss how a Museum acquires an estimated one million photographs, primarily on 35mm film, organizes the collection, begins digitization, and in the process builds an exhibition that features 15 photographers, dozens of cameras and lenses, and over three decades of community and newspaper history.

Since “joining the team” in November 2019, Carls has been focused on increasing discoverability and accessibility to CAM’s library and archival collections through expanded open hours, increased promotion, and by digitizing holdings. He also led the Museum’s online periodical, CAM Connects, which highlights its art, artifacts, and archival documents in regularly released themed e-blasts. Carls holds a Master of Library & Information Science degree from Dominican University in Chicago, Illinois.

Squibb has a bachelor’s degree in American History and a master’s in Library & Information Science with a concentration in Archives Management from Simmons University. She previously interned at Boston Architectural College and worked as the Archivist at Endicott College. In her spare time, Maegan teaches all things preservation in her online courses hosted by Preserve This.
